Hosting Tips for the Holidays

gp_butler.jpgCan a movie be made without a director? Would a team play their very best without a coach? My guess is probably not. Well, a party without a host is as good as an orchestra without a conductor. No matter how much you spend on a fancy caterer, valet, and door prizes, nothing makes a party more successful than a talented host. If the host thinks their job is over once the guests arrive, that’s when a party can fall flat. A good host knows how to make guests mingle, meet, eat, drink, and be merry; all without realizing someone (the host) is directing this blissful show. Worried you’re not a naturally gifted host? Luckily, there is very little training required! Read this, heed this, and you’ll be touted “the host with the most,” this season.

Be a match maker. This does not mean setting up your single friends to find true love. It means introducing guests with similar interests. Parties are always more fun when you invite a variety of people, some who know one another and some who don’t. However, you must then take it upon yourself initially, to bridge your various groups of friends.

Help the shy guy (or girl)
. Maybe you’ve invited a friend from college who’s in town for the week. If they don’t know anyone besides you, they might be a little shy at first. Give bashful guests a job that will help them interact with the rest of the party. Ask them to pass out some appetizers or play bartender for a bit. This gives them the perfect excuse to go up and talk to people.

Make a cameo
. Try your very best to chat with each guest for a few minutes. People always want to say hello to the host and everyone will feel more welcome once you have greeted them. Do not spend all your time reminiscing with your long lost college friend. You will be neglecting you entire party and your job as host!

Know your guests needs
. If you’ve invited vegetarians, people who don’t drink alcohol or children, make sure to have food and drink options for them. This will help them be able to enjoy the festivities.

Enjoy yourself!
This might be the hardest part of being a successful host. While it is your job to make sure everyone is having a good time, your guests will have more fun if you’re having fun! Herein lies the balancing act that becomes easier with every party you host. Just remember to relax, be social, and be yourself!
